On May 17, we celebrate World Internet Day, a date that reminds us of the transformative impact of this tool that connects millions of people and businesses around the world. In 2024, the number of internet users worldwide was estimated to be 5.5 billion, up from 5.3 billion the previous year. This proportion represents 68% of the world's population, according to data from Statista.
However, with this massive connectivity come increasing risks: The average global cost of a data breach in 2024 increased by 10% year-over-year and is the highest total ever, according to a report by IBM Security.
At DigiSOC, cybersecurity experts, we want you to use the internet safely. That's why, this World Internet Day, we're sharing practical tips backed by key data to protect your data and your business.
Why do we celebrate World Internet Day?
The internet has evolved rapidly since its beginnings in 1983 with the TCP/IP protocol, through the explosion of social media and mobile devices in the 2000s, to the current integration of artificial intelligence, the metaverse, and the imminent arrival of 6G and quantum internet. Today, more than 70% of the world's population has internet access, and there are more than 30 billion connected devices, which has transformed education, the economy, and society as a whole.
Data breaches 2025

Of the breaches linked to third-party involvement, double that of last year, they were driven in part by vulnerability exploitation and business disruptions.

Increase in attackers exploiting vulnerabilities to gain initial access and cause security breaches compared to last year's report.

Of the perimeter device vulnerabilities, organizations completely remediated them last year, while nearly half remained unresolved.

Of all the breaches analyzed, ransomware was present, marking a notable increase compared to last year's report.
Current Challenges: Inclusion, Privacy and Cybersecurity
Technological advancement presents great opportunities, but also urgent challenges such as the digital divide, technological sustainability, and, especially, cybersecurity. The widespread use of the internet means we share more and more personal and business information, exposing us to risks such as data theft, malware, and phishing.
Cybersecurity has become a fundamental pillar for businesses and users. Protecting sensitive information, ensuring operational continuity, and safeguarding corporate reputation are key tasks in an increasingly interconnected digital environment.
