Every March 31st, World Backup Day is commemorated, a key date to remember the importance of protecting digital information and preventing irrecoverable losses. In today's increasingly digital world, where cyberattacks and human error are commonplace, backing up data is an essential practice for every individual and organization.
Why is it important to make backups?
Growing business disruptions due to data breaches are increasing cybersecurity costs in Latin America.
Data is a company's most valuable asset. However, it's estimated that more than 2.5 quintillion bytes of data are lost each year, and many users and organizations underestimate the risk of losing critical information. From ransomware attacks to natural disasters, there are countless threats that can put data integrity at risk.
According to IBM's "Cost of a Data Breach" report, the average cost per data breach in 2024 in Latin America was US$2.76 million, as breaches become more disruptive and the demands on cybersecurity teams increase. Companies in the industrial and financial sectors experienced the most expensive breaches in the region, with average costs of US$3.54 million and US$3.22 million, respectively. Phishing attacks were the most common initial attack vector, accounting for 16% of incidents and costing an average of US$2.91 million per breach.
Cyberattacks like ransomware have an average recovery cost of $4.35 million, highlighting the high price of not being prepared. This scenario highlights the urgent need to adopt a robust backup strategy.
How often should a backup be made?
The frequency of backups depends on the type of data and how much you are willing to lose in the event of a failure.

Why should you make a backup?
Backing up is essential to protect your data and ensure its availability in the event of unexpected incidents:
Data Loss Prevention: Hardware failure, human error, or cyberattacks can cause the irreversible loss of valuable information.
Ransomware Protection: Ransomware encrypts your data and demands a ransom to recover it. An up-to-date backup can prevent you from paying the ransom.
Disaster Recovery: Events such as fire, flood, or theft can destroy physical equipment. Having an off-site backup ensures recovery.
Regulatory Compliance: Some regulations require data recovery plans and adequate backups to protect sensitive information.
Peace of Mind: Knowing you can restore your information quickly gives you confidence and minimizes the impact of any incident.

How to make a backup
Most people back up their data in two ways: to an external drive or via the internet. It's really easy; you only need to set it up once.
1. Choose what data to back up
Identify important files: documents, photos, videos, databases, emails, etc.
If it's for a business, prioritize business-critical information.
2. Apply the 3-2-1 rule
This strategy ensures that your data is protected against any incident:
3 copies of the data (the original and two backups).
2 different media (external drive, cloud, local server).
1 copy offsite, in the cloud, or on remote storage.
3. Use reliable tools
For personal users:
Google Drive, OneDrive, iCloud (for cloud files).
External hard drives or USB flash drives for physical storage.
Para empresas:
Advanced solutions like Rubrik.
NAS servers or secure cloud storage.
4. Automate the process
Set up automatic backups to avoid forgetting them.
On operating systems like Windows and macOS, you can use native tools like File History or Time Machine.
5. Verify and test the recovery
It's not enough to simply make copies; make sure you can actually restore the information when you need it.
Regularly test file recovery to avoid surprises.
World Backup Day is not just a symbolic date, but a reminder to adopt responsible practices that ensure information continuity and security. Don't wait for an incident to occur before appreciating the importance of your data.
Back up your data today and protect your digital future!
