International Safer Internet Day: Protecting Our Digital World

Writer: DigiSOCDigiSOC

International Safer Internet Day, also known as Safer Internet Day (SID), is an event that aims to promote responsible and safe use of digital technology, especially among children and young people.

The origin of this date dates back to 2004 as part of the European Union's SafeBorders project. Safer Internet Day was later adopted by the Insafe network, a European network of Safer Internet Centres (SICs). These centres are dedicated to implementing awareness and education campaigns, operating helplines and working directly with young people to promote safer use of the Internet.

Over these 21 years, Safer Internet Day has spread far beyond its origins, and is now celebrated in around 200 countries and territories on all continents, reaching millions of people around the world. In this way, more and more institutions and societies are becoming aware of the need to promote a safe digital environment for all, and also of emerging online security risks, such as cyberbullying, hate speech, data misuse and exposure to harmful content.

Each year, a specific theme is selected to focus the reflections. For example, in 2024 it was "Connecting with Respect and Empathy", while for 2025 it is "Together for a better Internet".

Main objective

  • Raising awareness about security: Promoting a safer digital environment for all users.

  • Responsible use: Encouraging respectful, critical and creative use of online technologies.

  • Protecting minors: Paying special attention to children and young people to protect them from online risks.
